Everybody is talking about it for some time now, and a few days ago, it was that moment when all the rumors and all the questions got some answers. Yes, it’s already here and in this first post of another series related to gadgets, I want to talk a little bit about the iPhone 5 which was launched just recently. I wanna tell from the start that I’m more like an Android fan, and not an Apple fanboy, but nevertheless, I admit that Apple products are for good reason, remarkable and amazing products. So let’s see what’s with this new iPhone.

Design

iPhone 5 design

A thinner and a lighter design

After the big fuzz and the success with the trial against Samsung, it would have been a little bit weird to add drastic changes to the phone itself, so the new iPhone comes with almost the same design. Compared to its predecessor (the 4S), the changes are not as big, the iPhone 5 has the same width as the iPhone 4S but is slightly taller. Also, the phone is only 7.6mm in thickness and it weighs only 112g. It has a 4” screen at a resolution of 1136 x 640, 16:9 aspect ratio and 326 PPI (Retina Display of course). So in terms of design, it’s the same iPhone that we know, but a little bit taller and thinner.

What’s new in iPhone 5

New iPhone

The screen: actually, this is the single and most anticipated feature of the new iPhone and also, the most notable change. This is a nice change and expected by many, but for now, this will also have a downside. Because apps designed for iOS and for iPhone are not scalable (like the ones from Adroid), the apps won’t adjust automatically on the news screen size, so most of them, until the developers will adjust that, will have a black bar on top and at the bottom of the screen. Basically, the apps will measure the same, even if the screen size is bigger, but I believe this will be only a matter of time until all the popular apps will be updated for the new screen size.

Panorama: you may say that this is not new and that this is already available on jailbroken iPhones, but this is different, and that’s because, Panoramic photos are now a part of iOS6, officially. So get ready for a bunch of websites dedicated only for this type of photography 🙂

4G: 4G speed are a part of the new trends when we talk about mobile carriers, so support for 4G networks is almost a must for all the new smartphones. Also, the support for 4G networks are already part of the new iPad, so no big surprise here.

New chip: iPhone 5 comes with a new chip, the A6 chip, which the people from Apple says is twice as fast as the A5, but “not power hungry”. This also translates as more power, a better performance, even more speed and smooth and realistic gameplay.

New connector: because the new iPhone 5 is thinner, a new connector was kinda necessary, so the old 30-pin connector was replaced with the new Lightning connector, a more durable and ….wait for it, a reversible one. This is kinda cool.

Maps: Google Maps (the most updated and comprehensive maps available) will be replaced by Apple Maps. I must say that this is something that many will not understand, and you may ask why the change? Well, I don’t understand either, but I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for that (maybe because the Apple maps are based on vector graphics which are superior to bitmaps graphics used by Google?)

iOS6: of course, the most important element for every iPhone, the “foundation of  iPhone” which is now at number 6 bringing more than 200 new features.

Final note

Like I said, I am an Android lover, but even so, I try to be open minded and I can see clearly that if  there’s one device that has changed our perspective and the way we look and use our phones, that would be the iPhone, and the new iPhone  5 is is definitely a worthy gadget, if you can afford it 🙂
